April 2, 2007 - Columbia University’s School of the Arts Film Division will present a festival of short film screenings and screenplay readings in New York City, from April 30 through May 10.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the festival, which has become known as a launching pad for many filmmakers.
Recent students have taken their work straight from the Columbia Film Festival to such prestigious venues as the Cannes, Sundance, Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals, as well as the Student Academy Awards, where Columbia films have won gold medals seven years out of the last ten, according to festival representatives.
This year’s films will screen at the IFC Center, 323 Sixth Avenue, from April 30 to May 3. The screenplay readings will take place at the McGraw-Hill Theater, 1221 Sixth Avenue, on May 7, and the festival will culminate with awards and screenings of the winning films at Symphony Space, Broadway and 95th Street, on May 10. For tickets, times, and information about the screenings and readings, please visit the festival website at www.cufilmfest.com.
“This is an extraordinary moment in time for Columbia University," said Lee C. Bollinger, president of Columbia University. "The quality of films coming out of our film program has never been better, and we believe that is a direct result of the thoughtful, humanistic narrative style of film that we teach our students from day one.”
A full ten percent of the short films shown at this year’s Sundance Festival came from last year’s Columbia Film Festival—an extraordinary testament to the quality of the work from Columbia student films.
Tickets are available through www.cufilmfest.com. An additional screening of selected films from the festival will take place in Los Angeles June 6 through 8.
