March 1, 2005 - Moviemaker magazine’s “Best Of” issue has named New York City the number one City for independent filmmakers to live and make movies in.
According to the magazine, “the city’s film-savvy nature is what’s truly impressive, and its getting more refined each year; there seem to be no lengths to which the Mayor’s Office won’t go to be sure a moviemaker gets the shot – or location – he or she needs. Spurred on by the enthusiasm and ‘go-get-em’ attitude of the city’s film commissioner, Katherine Oliver, moviemakers are asking for the run of the city and getting it.”
“Moviemaker magazine’s designation of New York as the best city for independent filmmakers to live and work in illustrates how competitive the Made in NY incentive program has made New York City,” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, said. “New York has always offered filmmakers the finest crews, richest talent pool and best locations, and now with a fifteen percent tax credit and free advertising for 'Made in NY' productions, the City is more film-friendly than ever. In addition to vendor discounts on car rentals, hotels, health clubs and more, the City offers a world-class concierge service from script to screen. The production industry employs 100,000 New Yorkers and contributes $5 billion per year to our economy, and we are committed to expanding the City’s share of this industry. Now more than ever, films should be Made in NY."
