The Apollo Theater Foundation, in Conjunction with the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, Presents “On Air: Careers in Radio Broadcasting

March 25, 2008 - On Saturday, April 5, the Apollo Theater Foundation, in conjunction with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, will present “On Air: Careers in Radio Broadcasting” at the Apollo Theater, exploring career opportunities in radio. The panel discussion will be preceded by a special Career Day workshop for teens with WNYC’s Radio Rookies.

At 9am, teenagers will have the opportunity to participate in a Career Day workshop with WNYC’s Radio Rookies. Radio Rookies is a New York Public Radio initiative that teaches teenagers about radio journalism. During the workshop, students will learn how to conduct an interview, craft a script, and digitally edit their audio.

Following the workshop, representatives from New York City’s top radio stations will be on hand to engage in a panel discussion moderated by Commissioner Katherine Oliver, who will also conduct an interview with a prominent radio personality. Panelists will describe their experiences working in New York City radio, explain the various opportunities that are available, and offer their advice on how to break into the industry.

Helen Little, On Air Host Mid-day (LITE-FM)/Formerly Program Director (POWER 105.1 FM)

Deon Livingston, General Manager (WBLS)

The panel begins at 10:30am. Doors open at 9:30am. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. RSVP to education@apollotheater.org by Wednesday, April 2nd. This event, which is free of charge, is presented in collaboration with Career Day at the Apollo, part of the Apollo Theater Education & Community Outreach Program.

To register for the workshop, contact education@apollotheater.org and include your name, grade, school, and a telephone number or email address. The workshop is for teens ages 13-18. Space is limited.

“Our local entertainment production industry employs 100,000 New Yorkers and contributes $5 billion to our economy on an annual basis,” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said. “Radio is an important sector of the industry, and this Career Day at the Apollo will give young people the chance to learn about the diverse opportunities available in New York City.”
