Opportunity Knocks for Commercial Lovers

By Kwame Patterson

March 1, 2007 - The New York Directors Guild of America Assistant Director Training Program is expanding into the commercial industry.

For nearly 40 years the program has been geared toward training in feature film and film television productions.

The New York Assistant Director Training Program is designed to provide opportunities for a limited number of people to become assistant directors of motion pictures. It consists of up to 350 days of on-the-job training combined with seminars and special assignments primarily in the New York City vicinity. This year the program will also incorporate a new track for people with a strong interest in commercial production.

“We look to target people who have already embarked upon a career in production and want to continue making inroads into the commercial world,” said Sandra Forman, administrator for the program.

She also said those who have been production assistants and want to further their careers into the commercial sector would be good candidates.

During the course of the fulltime, two-year program, trainees will be placed primarily on commercials with a smaller amount of time spent on long-form productions. After the first year, they will be evaluated by the Board of Trustees. If successful, trainees move on to the second year.

After completing the program, graduates will be eligible to join the DGA as second assistant directors. Applications for the training program are now available by contacting the training program office at (212) 397-0930. For more information about the training program visit www.dgatrainingprogram.org.
