A scene from The Squid and the Whale

March 1, 2005 - The Squid and the Whale was honored with the Dramatic Directing Award and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance film festival, and we now hear that the "Made in NY" production has been purchased by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment!

The Squid and the Whale was shot exclusively in New York City in July-August 2004, employing 50 New York City cast and crew members. It will bear the Made in NY mark of distinction in its end credits.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, writer/director Noah Baumbach revisited his youth shooting The Squid and the Whale on location here in New York City. Baumbach also wrote and directed Mr. Jealousy, which was filmed in NYC in 1997. He currently resides in Manhattan.

The film's stars also have deep roots in the Big Apple. Jeff Daniels recently worked on Imaginary Heroes, which was partially shot in NYC. His other NYC film credits include Radio Days, The House on Carroll Street, The Butcher's Wife and The Hours. Actress Laura Linney recently shot Kinsey and P.S. here in the Big Apple, and Jesse Eisenberg, a native New Yorker, shot Roger Dodger in NYC in 2002.

The Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting congratulates cast and crew for "making it in NY!"
