Big New Addition Off-Broadway

January 11, 2003 The state-of-the art Little Shubert Theatre opened in mid-December, just in time to ring in the new year. Located on West 42nd Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, the 499-seat theatre occupies a new 39-story residential tower named Theatre Row Apartments, and contains a fully computerized box office.

The theatre represents many firsts for the Shubert Organization and the City. It is the first Off-Broadway theatre owned by the Shubert Organization, and the first Off-Broadway theatre in New York built from the ground up. "We always thought about building a theatre," said Schoenfeld, "but we wanted to find the right site."

Shubert Chairman Gerald Schoenfeld said, "I would hope it is regarded as the most desirable off-Broadway theatre, primarily due to its new, large orchestra pit, stage, seating and sightlines." The stage itself and orchestra pit are comparable in size to the dimensions of many Broadway theatres. "Since we had the flexibility of building it from the ground up," Schoenfeld added, "we were not constrained by any existing space dimensions."

The auditorium's state-of-the-art stadium seating is ergonomically designed, and features generous legroom. The theatre also offers full access to persons with disabilities, and generously-sized restroom facilities in the inner lobby.

In February, "The Mandrake Root" starring Lynn Redgrave will premiere at the Little Shubert. Produced by Susan Dietz and directed by Warner Shook, the play explores mother-daughter relationships.
