December 30, 2005 – The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting’s December marketing campaign celebrated The Producers.
The Producers released in theatres on December 16, 2005. The film shot in New York City from February-May 2005, employing 150 New Yorkers, including crossover talent from theatre -- the most coveted actors in the world -- who starred in the film by day and appeared on Broadway by night.
When Mel Brooks decided to re-make the classic film, he reported choosing to "make it in New York" for the dynamism of our City, quality of our production industry, and superiority of our bagels. The film was the first to announce that it had been lured to our City by the "Made in NY" incentive program, an attractive package of tax and marketing credits and vendor discounts which has lured $600 million in new business to the City since January.
The Producers made liberal use of our City’s cinematic locations, filming scenes in which fifty women in walkers break into dance in the middle of Fifth Avenue and Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane dance inside Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain. The film was also the first to shoot at Steiner Studios, the City’s new state-of-the-art production facility which opened on the site of the Brooklyn Navy Yard last fall. It proudly bears the “Made in NY” logo in its end credits.
The co-branded bus shelter advertisements are part of the “Made in NY” incentive program’s marketing credit, which leverages the City’s assets to provide free advertising on bus shelters throughout the five boroughs to qualifying productions. Click here for more information.
