Spider Man 3 released in theatres Friday, May 4, 2007. The film shot in New York City sporadically throughout May - September 2006.
In Spider-Man™ 3, based on the legendary Marvel Comics series, Peter Parker has finally managed to strike a balance between his devotion to Mary Jane Watson and his duties as a superhero. But there is a storm brewing on the horizon. When his Spider-Man suit suddenly changes, turning jet-black and enhancing his powers, it transforms Peter as well. Under the influence of the suit, Peter becomes prideful and overconfident and he begins to neglect the ones he cares about the most. As two of the most-feared villains yet, Sandman and Venom, gather unparalleled power and a thirst for retribution, Peter’s greatest battle is the one within himself. Spider-Man will need to rediscover the compassion that makes him who he is: a hero.
Although much of the studio and green screen work was done elsewhere, there are a number of key scenes in Spider-Man 3 that shot in New York. One scene, where Spider-Man receives an honor from the police captain’s daughter, was shot in Foley Square. The scene featured a 100 piece band (who made a cameo at the Spider-Man premiere in Astoria, Queens), 100 kids dressed in Spider-Man outfits and a “Spidey-Cam”, something Director Sam Raimi and his team created in the first Spider-Man film.
The camera is essentially a camera on a wire that goes from building to ground to show the view from Spider-Man’s eyes as he swings through New York City’s skyline. They constructed the shot by laying wire on the ground from the start point to the stopping point the night before. They then winched the wire up and the camera slid down during the scene.
The film also features a great scene by the Hilton hotel on 51st Street and 6th Avenue. Despite filming in a tight space, the production managed to keep two lanes of traffic open and worked with the Hilton to ensure taxicabs had access to hotel guests, and that the guests knew how to get to the taxis for their travel needs.
The film stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco, who shot Spider-Man 1 and 2 in New York, Topher Grace, who shot Mona Lisa Smile and In Good Company in New York City, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Thomas Haden Church.
