Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man shoots in Union Square.

Spider-Man 2 was released in theaters by Sony Pictures on June 30, 2004.  A sequel to the already successful Spider-Man, it broke the box office record for the highest one-day opening on a Wednesday by grossing over $40million on it's opening day!

Its Tagline: This summer a man will face his destiny. A hero will be revealed.

Spider-man 2 filmed across the five boroughs of New York City, and got an early start in October of 2002, with mostly still photography shooting, and continued shooting into the Summer of 2003. The filmmakers took full advantage of the City and its hospitality while shooting this feature, and it is evident in its list of locations. Some locations that were utilized in the first film were also used in the second, such as the Flatiron Building (the Daily Bugle offices), Columbia University (Peter Parker's School) and 69th Road between Metropolitan Avenue and Sybilla Street in Forest Hills, Queens (Aunt May's House).

Other New York City locations included:
· Rooftop Shots at: 225 Park Ave between 18 & 19 Streets, 260 Fifth Avenue between 28 & 28 Streets., 11 East 26 Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues, and 222 West 15th Street between 7th and 8th Aves.
· Cypress Hills Cemetery - 833 Jamaica Avenue in Brooklyn
· Pell Street @ Doyers Street in Chinatown, Manhattan
· Subway shots @ Chambers Street and Park Row
· Joe's Pizza (where Peter delivers pizza) - 233 Bleeker Street @ Carmine Street (*fun fact: the phone number on the helmet Tobey Maguire wears while working as a pizza delivery man is the actual phone # for Joe's Pizza!)
· The Rose Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History - 81st Street between Columbus and Central Park West
· The City Hall Park Fountain - Beekman Street and Park Row
· Intercontinental Hotel - 111 East 48 Street between Park and Lexington Avenues

This sequel reunites most of the original cast and crew from the first box-office smash as well as introducing some new and exciting characters. Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Willem Dafoe, Rosemary Harris and director Sam Raimi have all returned and welcome newcomers Alfred Molina and Donna Murphy into the mix.

Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker) has been featured in many New York films. In addition to the original Spider-Man, Tobey can be seen in such 'Made in NY' films as Seabiscuit, Deconstructing Harry and he was one of the producers on Spike Lee's The 25th Hour.

Kirsten Dunst (Mary-Jane Watson) has also performed in many New York films, starring in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Mona Lisa Smile, as well as the original Spider-Man. Kirsten made her feature film debut in New York City, in the Woody Allen film New York Stories.

This film also stars a famous face in the New York entertainment world, Donna Murphy. Her character in the film is Rosalie Octavius, wife of the evil villain Doctor Octopus. Donna stars in the Broadway smash and multiple Tony Award winning musical Wonderful Town opposite Jennifer Westfeldt.

Sam Raimi has worked in the industry as a writer, producer, actor, and director. As one of today's hottest directors, Raimi boasts a very distinctive style of filming through unique uses of camera angles. Though Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are his only tie-ins with the New York film scene, he is best known for writing, directing, and editing Army of Darkness, the third film in the Evil Dead Trilogy.

Writer and Spider-Man creator Stan Lee is a native New Yorker. Born in New York in 1922, Stan Lee has been involved in the world of comics since the age of seventeen.  He created some of the most famous superheroes that have graced both the pages of comic books and the big screen. His portfolio of characters includes The X-Men, Dare-Devil, The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, and Iron Man. All of these comics have either already been turned in to major motion pictures, or are in the works to do so.
