The Manchurian Candidate

The Manchurian Candidate sets up for a crane shot in Sheep Meadow, Central Park.

Released in theatres on July 30, 2004 by Paramount Pictures, The Manchurian Candidate is a remake of the 1962 Oscar nominated classic of the same name which starred Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Janet Leigh, and Angela Lansbury. John Frankenheimer directed the film which received 2 Academy Award nominations.

For this remake, New York City was once again called upon to star in the feature. Filming took place from September, 2003 to as recently May, 2004. The film used some of New York City's most famous locations, including the New York Public Library, the Plaza Hotel, Sheep Meadow in Central Park and the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

The production shot elsewhere in Manhattan, as well as the Bronx and Queens, including:
· Raymond Shaw's (Liev Schreiber) Private Office - 10th Avenue @ 36th Street.
· The Bronx Botanical Garden was used for 4 days to stage a 'political gala' scene.
· Compass Restaurant - 208 W. 70th Street between Amsterdam and West End Drive.
· Regent Wall Street Hotel - 55 Wall Street between William and Hanover.
· Baruch College - 135 E. 22nd Street @ Lexington.
· Kaufman Astoria Studios

The Manchurian Candidate stars Academy Award winners Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Jon Voight.
· Denzel Washington (Ben Marco) is no stranger to filming in New York. His previous New York films include He Got Game, The Siege, The Bone Collector and he is soon to start working on his next film Tru Blu, which (fingers crossed) will be filmed here in NYC.
· Meryl Streep (Eleanor Shaw) is also a veteran actress who has filmed a great deal in New York City. Her New York credits include The Hours, Sophie's Choice, Kramer vs. Kramer, Manhattan, and most recently the Emmy Award winning television movie Angels in America, which was filmed entirely in New York. She was recently nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Best Actress for her role in Angels in America.
· Liev Schreiber (Raymond Shaw) has also done his fair share of filming in New York including the films Kate & Leopold, Hamlet, and Ransom.
· Jon Voight's (Senator Thomas Jordan) portfolio includes the acclaimed starring role in Midnight Cowboy, Ali, and Zoolander.
· Director Jonathan Demme is probably best known for his Oscar winning film, The Silence of the Lambs. Demme was born in Long Island and, like the majority of his cast, is well versed in the NYC scene as a writer, director, producer and sometime thespian. Although this is Demme's first “Made in NY” feature film, he directed a vignette for HBO's Subway Stories series in Manhattan, and guest starred in an episode of NY's own Oz in 2000. His other major credits include the Oscar winning Philadelphia and Devil in a Blue Dress, both of which starred The Manchurian Candidate's leading man, Denzel Washington.
· Richard Condon is the author of the book that both this remake and the original film are based on. He was born in New York City in 1915 and in the 1950's he worked in NYC as a Broadway producer and writer.
