Kinsey released in theatres on November 12, 2004. The film shot in New York City from July-September 2003, employing 90 New York City cast and crew members. Kinsey is an example of the City's versatile locations, which were used to stand in for New Jersey and Indiana in scenes set over a period of five decades. The Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting assisted with the preparation of locations to ensure that they were consistent with the period scenes.
Director Bill Condon and Producer Gail Mutrux chose to film in New York City because the film's 100 speaking parts demanded the talent only available here. The film made use of Broadway acting talent, the most coveted actors in the world. Condon also wrote The Devil and Daniel Webster (2001) which was shot in NYC, and Mutrux produced Donnie Brasco (1997) and Quiz Show (1994) in NYC.
The film stars Liam Neeson, who shot Gangs of New York (2002) and Husbands and Wives (1992) in NYC. Laura Linney recently shot The Squid and The Whale and P.S. (2004) in NYC.
