The Interpreter

Nicole Kidman shoots a scene of The Interpreter on Broadway and 13th street

The Interpreter released in U.S. theatres on April 22, 2005. The film tells the story of a United Nations interpreter who overhears an assassination plot.

Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Oliver worked with the filmmakers, labor and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to help The Interpreter become the first film in history to shoot inside the United Nations. As a result, the entire feature was shot in New York City between March-November 2004, employing approximately 125 New York City cast and crew members. Click here for more information.

Director/actor Sydney Pollack has shot several films in NYC including Three Days of the Condor, Tootsie and Sabrina. He starred in NYC-filmed Husbands and Wives and executive produced the films Bright Lights, Big City and Changing Lanes.

Prior to The Interpreter, Sean Penn’s last NYC production was 1999’s Sweet and Lowdown. He also shot Carlito’s Way and State of Grace in NYC.

Nicole Kidman has spent a lot of time filming in NYC. Her local credits include Birth, The Stepford Wives, and The Hours, for which she won an Oscar. Kidman resides here in Manhattan for much of the year.

The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting assisted with locations for the film, and in particular worked with the production to stage a complicated explosion scene. The film shot at locations including:
