El Cantante releases in theatres on August 3, 2007. The film shot in New York City from November of 2005 to February of 2006, employing 478 New York City cast and crew members.
El Cantante used New York City locations because both the story of Salsa and the story of Hector Lavoe’s meteoric rise to the top begin here. El Cantante chronicles Lavoe’s life as a young man, from singing on the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to clubs in the Bronx, to sold-out Madison Square Garden. But with Lavoe’s quick rise to the top came a number of personal demons, including his battle with drugs and ultimately, his untimely death. The film shot in only two places to recount Lavoe’s fascinating tale – Puerto Rico and New York City.
The film stars Marc Anthony as Hector Lavoe. Anthony shot Bringing Out the Dead in NYC in 1999, and Big Night in 1996. Jennifer Lopez shot Jersey Girl in 2004 and Maid in Manhattan in 2002.
