The NYPD Movie/TV Unit was founded along with the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting in 1966. In the four decades since, the Unit has worked in concert with the MOFTB to successfully balance the needs of New Yorkers and the production industry, facilitating the production of tens of thousands of films, television shows, commercials, music videos and still photography shoots across the City. When projects shoot at an exterior location which requires traffic control, or has a scene with prop firearms, weapons or actors in police uniforms, members of the Unit are assigned -- at no cost -- to be on set.
Millions of people fill the streets of the City each day visiting our tourist attractions, going to school and work, and enjoying the many activities and sites that New York City has to offer. The Movie/TV Unit ensures that all of this happens while also meeting the needs of our $5 billion entertainment industry. New York is unique in offering this free service to productions, giving producers unprecedented access to key locations and monitoring the use of children, stunts, prop firearms, staged crime scenes, equipment, safety and parking on the streets and public spaces of New York City. Many of the scenes filmed each day on location in New York simply would not be possible without this Unit.
As the first unit of our kind, our long history of experience with the entertainment industry ensures that producers get their shots in the midst of our bustling City. We look forward to many more years of facilitiating a high volume of filming while ensuring a safe environment for film crews and for the people of the City of New York.
