Hurst tools, air bags and hand tools were used to extricate the trapped passengers beneath sections of the ferry that had been torn open. FDNY Fire and EMS units worked side by side, administering lifesaving medical treatment and stabilizing, packaging and removing the injured from the vessel to awaiting ambulances. As the tracking Officer, Chief O'Brien worked with EMS Chief Ulyses Grant (now deceased) to keep the Incident Commander up to date with information about the injured and fatalities.
