Fire Marshals Graduate from Academy

Eleven fire marshals graduated from the Bureau of Fire Investigation (BFI) Academy on May 30, during a ceremony at FDNY Headquarters.

“This is not an easy program and it is impossible to overstate the work you do in the BFI,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

The graduates will now enter a distance learning program in the field, where they work closely with a seasoned fire marshal.

“There are many bureaus in the FDNY that make this Department great,” said Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano. “But make no mistake about it, BFI is one of the most important we have because your work translates to life safety.”

During the ceremony it also was announced that Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Robert Byrnes will take over as Chief Fire Marshal. Chief Louis Garcia recently retired after 35 years on the job.

“We applaud each and every one of you for your achievements,” said Chief Byrnes.
