15 Graduate from FDNY Officers Management Institute
Fifteen fire and EMS officers graduated from the FDNY Officers Management Institute (FOMI) on May 30 during a ceremony at Headquarters.
Established in 2002, FOMI provides fire and EMS officers with a customized curriculum of leadership and management training, which includes presentations by experts from the corporate community, government and homeland security.
“This program is designed to do exactly what it’s doing – enhancing the wealth of information you have received and giving you more tools for the future,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.
As part of the course, the officers created projects to enhance Department policy and strategy. This year’s projects included division based training programs, improved internal communications initiatives, alternative means of transportation for non-priority patients, and improving information and intelligence sharing techniques.
“This year’s projects were spectacular,” said Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano. “You can see the amount of work that went into them.”
FOMI is a six-month program offered through Columbia University’s Picker Center for Executive Education. It is funded by the FDNY Foundation and is taught at Jack Welch Executive Training Center in Crotonville, NY.
“This program taught me how to view myself in a new way … increased my perspective of the Department as an organization … and taught me how the Department fits into the larger context, most notably city government,” said Deputy Chief James Donlevy.
This year’s class is the program’s sixth and was the most diverse in history, including fire chiefs, EMS chiefs and supervising fire marshals.
“I have tremendous admiration for all of you,” said Joann Baney, Faculty Director of FOMI. “You are everything they say you are – brave, genuine, real people.”
