Fire SAFETY / FIRE EXTINGUISHERS / COMPLAINTS ABOUT PFE COMPANIES

Complaints about Portable Fire Extinguishers CompaniesBe aware that the FDNY does not send private PFE companies to conduct official FDNY inspections. That claim is always false. It is wrong and could be grounds for the FDNY to revoke the license of any PFE company making this claim. Therefore, you are not required to allow any private PFE company to enter your property.

A representative of a private company engaged in the servicing of fire safety equipment (such as a portable fire extinguisher servicing company) is prohibited from wearing FDNY clothing and logos.

Illegal companies (not recognized by the FDNY) servicing Portable Fire Extinguishers in New York City should be promptly reported. To check the status of any company, http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/pdf/fire_prevention/fire_ext_app_rpt_1.pdf .

All complaints can be e-mailed to PUBCERT@fdny.nyc.gov or simply call 718-999-2533.

Be aware that price complaints are outside of our jurisdiction whether you are buying new or servicing existing Extinguishers. We strongly advise you to comparison shop with several PFE companies. Using only company before buying anything could easily result in overpaying by hundreds of dollars.

The FDNY does not regulate the sale of new portable fire extinguishers. You can purchase them at a wide variety of retail stores, including most hardware stores. Another option would be to purchase them from a company engaged in the business of servicing portable fire extinguishers.

Regarding price complaints, the FDNY can only refer you to the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs at (212) 487-4444. Be wise, compare.
