Fort Totten/FDNY
Fire Academy & Life Safety Campus

In 1997, the Fort Totten Redevelopment Authority approved the Department’s proposal to use 120 acres of Fort Totten to create a new fire training academy and for new parkland space. The Fire Department will receive approximately 55 acres for its new training academy and 40 buildings that will be renovated for various training, classroom and administrative functions. The City Parks Department will receive approximately 50 acres of open parkland space, the landmarked old fort area and approximately 15 acres and 10 buildings for use by not-for-profit organizations.
The Fire Department has completed a feasibility study on the project and is working with numerous Federal, State and City agencies on the property’s conveyance. After conveyance, the Department will begin the design work for the creation/renovation of the campus. At this time, it is anticipated that design probably will take 18 months and three years more to complete construction.
