FDNY REMINDS NEW YORKERS TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES IN THEIR SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS WHEN CHANGING THEIR CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will be at FDNY Fire Zone – 34 West 51st Street at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 7, reminding all New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when changing their clocks for the beginning of Daylight Saving Time this weekend.

“A working smoke detector is vital to escaping and surviving a fire,” said Commissioner Cassano. “Every year, in 75 percent of fire-related deaths in New York City there is no working smoke detector present, and this year already nine people have died where there was no working smoke detector.”

As part of this semi-annual outreach effort, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Team are distributing 30,000 batteries, along with electronic candles and fire safety literature in multiple languages, at 27 transportation hubs and shopping centers throughout the five boroughs.  The batteries were generously donated to the FDNY Foundation by Duracell.

The FDNY Fire Zone holds fire safety demonstrations throughout the year for people of all ages. Thanks to generous donations to the FDNY Foundation, the Fire Zone recently completed a $200,000 upgrade of its digital technology, including the lights, sound and projection systems. These upgrades are designed to improve the delivery of the FDNY’s fire safety message, as well as enhance the overall experience for the visitors.
