FIRE COMMISSIONER CASSANO SWEARS-IN NEW CLASS OF PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTERS

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will swear-in a new class of Probationary Firefighters (Probies) at the FDNY Training Academy – Building 9 Auditorium, Randall’s Island, on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 8 a.m. The new class is the second most diverse in the Fire Department’s history – 46 percent of the recruits are people of color.  The probationary firefighters, known as “Probies,” will attend a rigorous training program at the Department’s Fire Academy located on Randall’s Island. 

Among the entering class, 16 percent identify as Black, 27 percent as Hispanic and three percent as Asian.  This past decade, the Fire Department has doubled the number of Firefighters from minority backgrounds serving in New York City.

Over their 18 weeks at the FDNY Training Academy, this class will be extensively trained in all aspects of their job as Firefighters: fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, and auto extrication; building inspections and procedures for engine and ladder operations.
