Department Unveils New Vehicles, Rescue Boats and Equipment Purchased Since Hurricane Sandy

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will preside over a ceremony promoting 51 FDNY members on Wednesday, October 30th at 11 a.m at the FDNY Training Academy, Building 12 on Randall’s Island.  Six Battalion Chiefs will be promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief and 45 Firefighters will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  Following the ceremony, new vehicles, boats and equipment purchased by the Department in response to Hurricane Sandy will be on display, including 2.5-ton high-axle transport vehicles that can operate in more than 4 feet of water, rescue boats designed to operate in flooded urban streets and portable water pumps that can pump 500 gallons of water per minute.

“Immediately following Sandy, the Department sought to improve even further on our ability to respond to the unique challenges created by the storm, especially the unprecedented widespread urban flooding we experienced,” said Commissioner Cassano.  “This new specialized equipment, and this group of newly promoted fire officers, demonstrates the Department’s unwavering commitment to always improving our preparedness and the life-saving services we provide.”

Together, the newly promoted members represent over 675years of experience with the Department.  They will be assigned to various units throughout the city.
