Press Releases / 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 7, 2013

The New York City Fire Department and Tishman Speyer will celebrate National Fire Prevention Week 2013 with a morning of events, and the swearing in of more than 300 junior firefighters at Rockefeller Center on Tuesday October 8, 2013 starting at 11 a.m.  The Junior Firefighter’s Pledge, an oath designed to remind children to practice fire safety and share it with their family and friends, will be administered by Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano at noon.

“Teaching children the importance of fire safety is one of the most significant missions of the New York City Fire Department,” said Commissioner Cassano.  “Each year, through the great work of our Fire Safety Education Unit and the FDNY Foundation – and thanks to support from loyal partners like Tishman Speyer – we bring this vital message directly to an ever growing number of New Yorkers.”

Children from schools throughout the five boroughs will participate in the event, taking the oath on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center while wearing red junior fire helmets and learning invaluable lessons in fire safety from members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit.  Additionally, all children will have the opportunity to interact with firefighters and fire apparatus, as well as to view demonstrations by FDNY members.

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano; Chief of Department Edward S. Kilduff; Members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit; Representatives from the FDNY Foundation; and Tishman Speyer Director of Fire and Life Safety, Sandy Sansevero.
