FDNY CELEBRATES FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2013
WITH SEVEN DAYS OF EVENTS

The New York City Fire Department is marking the 91st National Fire Prevention Week 2013, currently underway, by holding events in all five boroughs from Sunday, October 6 through Saturday, October 12.  Every event held throughout this week gives New Yorkers the opportunity to interact with the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and to learn invaluable, life-saving lessons in fire safety.

“The Fire Department’s aggressive and sustained fire safety education efforts continue to be a major factor in reducing the number of civilian fire deaths in New York City, including, in 2012, the fewest civilian fire fatalities ever recorded,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano said.  “The FDNY’s Fire Safety Education Unit has reached more than 600,000 New Yorkers with their critical messages of fire safety and fire prevention, working year-round and especially during National Fire Prevention Week.”

Established in 1922, National Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures, leaving 100,000 homeless. Every year since, in the second week of October, fire departments throughout the country have commemorated the anniversary by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
