Press Releases / 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JuLY 19, 2013

The New York City Fire Department will host the 12th Annual Blessing of its Marine Fleet at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Saturday, July 20 at 11 a.m.  The FDNY Marine Fleet consists of more than 20 vessels responsible for over 560 miles of coastline and harbors.  There will be a procession of fireboats featuring the Three Forty Three, Fire Fighter II, Bravest, along with additional FDNY fireboats and medical response boats, followed by a water display.

“FDNY Marine Operations’ fleet of fireboats is faster, stronger and more advanced than ever before,” said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano.  “During Superstorm Sandy, our boats were a tremendous resource, navigating flooded neighborhoods as our Members acted under perilous conditions to rescue their fellow New Yorkers, exhibiting the determination and dedication that makes the FDNY the best Fire Department in the world.”

In the past several years the FDNY has welcomed several new fireboats into its fleet.  In May of 2010, the Three Forty Three was commissioned, followed by Fire Fighter II in November of that year.  Each vessel is 140 feet long, weighs 500 tons and has the capability to pump 50,000 gallons of water each minute.  The fireboat Bravest was commissioned in May of 2011 and has a top speed of over 50 miles-per-hour, making it the fastest in the fleet.

The weekend will feature a wide range of activities for the public, including: rescue demonstrations, tours of FDNY engines, ladders and ambulances, as well as  the 5th Annual "Battle of the Boroughs" cooking competition and the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands, both featuring FDNY Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs.  All events are part of Firefighter Appreciation Weekend at Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
