MAYOR BLOOMBERG AND FIRE COMMISSIONER CASSANO TO PRESIDE AT AN ANNUAL MEDAL DAY CEREMONY

Commissioner Cassano Announces Sandy Campaign Service Ribbon for All Members Who Worked During the Storm

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will preside at the annual FDNY Medal Day Ceremony at 11 a.m on Wednesday, June 5 at the 69th Regiment Armory.  The event will honor seven Fire Officers, 28 Firefighters, two EMS Officers, four Paramedics, four Emergency Medical Technicians, one Fire Marshal, and three Fire Companies for their courageous acts at emergency scenes throughout the city in 2012.

Thirty of this year’s honorees will be recognized for their work during Superstorm Sandy, including Lieutenant Thomas Woods of Ladder 154, who will receive the Department’s highest honor, the James Gordon Bennett Medal.  Lt. Woods rescued 25 people from a rising storm surge and rapidly moving fire in Belle Harbor the night of the storm.

In addition, Commissioner Cassano announced that more than 7,000 FDNY members – both uniformed and civilian – who worked tirelessly during Superstorm Sandy will receive a Sandy Campaign Service Ribbon to honor them for their efforts.  This is the first service ribbon created since the Department’s response to Hurricane Katrina, when more than 650 FDNY members were honored for their work.
