Press Releases / 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MAY 22, 2013

The New York City Fire Department will host its annual FDNY EMS Health Fair and EMS Competition on Thursday, May 23 at the MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn starting at 8 a.m.  Sponsored by Philips Healthcare, Athena GTX, Sartin Services, Southerland Global Services, Motorola, and Sansio, the event includes free trainings in bystander CPR as well as the chance to see state-of-the-art equipment in the EMS Technology Tent, tour an FDNY ambulance, donate blood, and meet combat stress dogs used by soldiers who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition, at 12:30 p.m. there will be a blessing of the Department’s new Medical Evacuation Transportation Unit (METU) – a specially configured patient care vehicle, which, when properly staffed, can provide transportation for up to 24 non-ambulatory patients, or up to ten stable wheelchair bound patients involved in mass casualty incidents.

The day also includes the 13th Annual EMS Competition, beginning at 8 a.m., in which FDNY Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics from across the City test their life-saving skills against one another in a series of real-life scenarios that include mock patients. Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will present the EMS competition awards at 1 p.m.

The daylong event is a part of National EMS Week 2013 – which runs from Sunday, May 19 to Saturday, May 25 – and is designed to promote public safety, attract potential EMS recruits and celebrate the work of more than 3,000 members of FDNY’s Emergency Medical Service.
