Press Releases / 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARCH 14, 2013

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano and Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Edna Wells Handy, joined by GreeNYC’s mascot Birdie, and Hot Dog the FDNY Fire Safety mascot, will announce the top performing FDNY firehouses and EMS station in the DCAS Department of Energy Management “Energy Incentive Alignment Program” at the quarters of Engine 258/Ladder 115, 10-40 47th Avenue, Queens on Friday March 15, 1 p.m. In recognition of their achievement, the top firehouse in each borough and the top EMS Station in the city will each receive an Energy Star certified LED television to help continue their energy reduction.

“From reducing electrical use in our firehouses and EMS stations to increasing the number of hybrid vehicles in our fleet, the Department has made supporting New York City’s green initiatives a top priority,” said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. “Working closely with DCAS, we’re continuing to reduce our energy consumption at FDNY sites through upgrades at existing facilities and by incorporating green designs into new facilities under construction.”

Commissioner Edna Wells Handy said, “DCAS’ goal is to provide service that is better, faster, cheaper and, consistent with this announcement, greener. The FDNY is a key partner with us in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from government operations. I am thrilled to join Commissioner Cassano in recognizing this tremendous achievement. The FDNY has taken energy savings to new heights and DCAS is proud to have been a part.”

FDNY was one of the seven largest New York City agencies to adhere to an energy budget created based on the previous fiscal year. Citywide, FDNY reduced overall energy costs by over $683,254 in 2012 and reduced energy usage by 178,000 kilowatt hours.
