***MEDIA ADVISORY***

FDNY REMINDS NEW YORKERS TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES IN THEIR SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS WHEN THEY CHANGE THEIR CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND

In 79% of New York City's Fire-related Deaths in 2012, No Working Smoke Detector Was Present

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano, will be at Union Square, 14th Street and Broadway, at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 8, reminding all New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks this weekend for the start of Daylight Saving Time.

“In 2012, the Department recorded 58 fire related fatalities, the lowest number in New York City history. However, in 79% of those cases, no working smoke detector was present,” said Commissioner Cassano.  “A working smoke detector dramatically increases the chances of escaping and surviving a fire. Simply put, working smoke detectors save lives.”

All weekend, at twenty major transportation hubs and shopping centers in all five boroughs, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will be distributing fire safety information and batteries for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Duracell has donated 100,000 batteries to the FDNY Foundation for distribution at Fire Safety Events this weekend, and throughout the year.
