Press Releases / 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 12, 2012

"Honor Roll of Life Plaque" will be dedicated to Fire Academy

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will announce the winners of the first ever Commissioner's Cup at FDNY Headquarters, 9 Metrotech Center, Brooklyn on Monday, October 15, at 11 a.m. The Commissioner's Cup is a new FDNY initiative where FDNY members compete citywide to determine which Division can produce the highest number of blood donations in the calendar year.

"The act of donating blood is one that truly resonates with every member of the Department," Fire Commissioner Cassano said. "FDNY Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics are both strong donors to - and frequent recipients of - the vital service the New York Blood Center provides. In the last 30 years alone, FDNY members have made over 25,000 donations to the New York Blood Center - and so many severely injured FDNY members have seen their lives saved in large part thanks to blood donations."

The Commissioner's Cup Competition, which was held in 2011, featured FDNY Fire and EMS Divisions conducting blood drives in their respective response areas. At each blood drive, FDNY members and those in the communities they serve used the account number, "4FDNY," at the time of donation in order to record the results. The competition raised a total of 1160 units of blood.

In addition at the ceremony, the "Honor Roll of Life" plaque will be dedicated to the FDNY Fire Academy. This plaque honors the 140 FDNY members to date who have given the gift of life through a bone marrow or stem cell donation. Members of the FDNY make up New York Blood Center's single largest group of bone marrow and stem cell donors, accounting for 13 percent of all donors from New York Blood Center.

About the FDNY / NYBC Partnership
FDNY encourages its members to donate blood and other blood products, such as platelets, bone marrow and stem cells. Its bone-marrow-donation partnership with NYBC began in 1990. Over the past twenty years, the FDNY has become the single largest group on NYBC's bone marrow registry with more than 8,000 FDNY members on the donor list. Probationary firefighters are encouraged to sign up for the bone marrow registry during their training at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island.
