FDNY CELEBRATES FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2012 WITH WEEKLONG SERIES OF EVENTS

The New York City Fire Department will hold 27 events from Sunday, October 7 to Saturday, October 13 in all five boroughs to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week 2012. At every event during this important week, New Yorkers of all ages will have the chance to interact with members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and learn valuable, life-saving lessons in fire safety.

"New York City has seen a steep decline in the number of fire related fatalities in the past decade; with the last two years featuring the lowest numbers ever recorded," Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano said. "These results are directly related to the Department's aggressive fire safety education efforts year round - and especially during National Fire Prevention Week - which bring this vital information to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers."

In support of Fire Prevention Week 2012, Target is donating $25,000 to the FDNY Foundation for fire safety education. In addition, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will be holding events at Target locations all week long.

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the country have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
