FDNY FIRE COMMISSIONER AND STAMFORD FIRE CHIEFS JOIN TO URGE EVERYONE TO HAVE A WORKING SMOKE DETECTOR IN THEIR HOME
New Yorkers Reminded to Change Their Smoke Detector Batteries When They Change Their Clocks for Daylight Saving Time
70% of Fire-related Deaths Occur in Homes Not Equipped with a Working Smoke Detector
Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano, along with Stamford Fire Chief Antonio Conte and Deputy Chief Bill Smith, will be at the quarters of Engine 24/Ladder 5, 227 Avenue of the Americas, 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, reminding everyone to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks this weekend for the start of Daylight Saving Time.
On December 25, 2011, a fire on Shippan Avenue in Stamford, CT, killed five people, including three young children. No working smoke detector was present at this fire. In New York City, 16 people have died in fires in 2012 where no working smoke detector was present.
"Every year, hundreds of people across America needlessly die in fires in their home where there was no working smoke detector present," said Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. "I thank our friends from the Stamford Fire Department for standing with us to deliver the crucially important, yet simple message - working smoke detectors save lives."
All weekend, at twenty locations throughout New York City, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will be distributing batteries for smoke detectors to New Yorkers.
