Press Releases / 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 9, 2011

The New York City Fire Department will be holding events from Sunday, October 9 to Saturday, October 15 in all five boroughs to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week 2011. At every event during this important week, New Yorkers of all ages will have the chance to interact with members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and learn valuable, life-saving lessons in fire safety.

"National Fire Prevention Week is so important because it shines a spotlight on the importance of fire safety education," Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano said. "Year round, at thousands of events, the FDNY puts in a tremendous amount of effort educating New Yorkers on fire safety and fire prevention, informing them about the steps they can take to make themselves and their homes fire safe. These efforts have helped lead to the historic lows we have seen in fire related deaths over the last decade."

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the country have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
