FIRE COMMISSIONER AND FIREFIGHTERS FROM FDNY OFFICIAL 2012 CALENDAR OF HEROES REMIND NEW YORKERS TO CHANGE THE BATTERIES IN THEIR SMOKE DETECTORS WHEN THEY CHANGE THEIR CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND
Cover of FDNY Official 2012 Calendar of Heroes will be revealed
Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano, along with firefighters from the FDNY Official 2012 Calendar of Heroes, will be at the FDNY Fire Zone, 34 West 51st Street, 2 p.m. on Friday, March 11, reminding New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks this weekend for the start of Daylight Saving Time. At the event, the cover photo for the FDNY Official 2012 Calendar of Heroes will be revealed.
“Over seventy percent of fire-related deaths occur in homes not equipped with working smoke detectors. Checking and changing your smoke detector batteries when you change your clocks is the simplest way to protect yourself and your family from a fire,” said Commissioner Cassano. “We know this official FDNY calendar will raise funds and awareness about fire safety and will serve to remind everyone of ways to be fire safe year-round.”
The proceeds from the sale of the FDNY Official 2012 Calendar of Heroes will go directly to the non-profit arm of the FDNY, the FDNY Foundation. The FDNY Foundation’s primary focus is educating the public about the dangers of fire and offering ways that everyone can make their home and family fire safe.
All weekend, at locations throughout the city, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will be distributing batteries for smoke alarms to New Yorkers. These batteries come from a donation of 75,000 batteries by Duracell to the FDNY Foundation.
In 2010, the FDNY held 6,379 educational fire safety presentations reaching over 600,000 New Yorkers, and distributed 25,000 smoke alarms and 100,000 batteries at events in all five boroughs. In addition, last year saw the launch of a new fire safety website, www.fdnyfiresmart.org, which offers videos, interactive games and tips for children, parents and seniors, as well as detailed lesson plans for teachers.
