FIRE COMMISSIONER CASSANO TO PRESIDE AT PROMOTION CEREMONY FOR EIGHT EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICE CHIEFS, 21 LIEUTENANTS AND FIVE PARAMEDICS

Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano will preside over a promotion ceremony for eight Emergency Medical Service Chiefs, including Chief of EMS Abdo Nahmod, 21 Lieutenants and five Paramedics on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the FDNY Academy on Randall’s Island at 11 a.m.

“The 34 members we’re promoting, from the Chief of EMS to the Paramedics in the field, are 34 examples of the best Emergency Medical Service anywhere in the world,” Commissioner Cassano said.  “Chief Nahmod has an outstanding record of service with the Department and I have every reason to believe he’ll lead FDNY EMS into the future with continued dedication and innovation.  The seven other chiefs and all the new Lieutenants and Paramedics have also shown tremendous commitment and I know we’ll all benefit from their service to this Department and this city.”

Chief Nahmod, originally appointed Chief of EMS on Jan. 5, has 25 years of service with the city’s Emergency Medical Service, starting as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in 1986 and working his way up through the ranks to become Chief of Emergency Medical Dispatch in 2008.  He recently earned a Master’s degree in Homeland Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security in Monterey, Calif. last March.  He was recognized five times during his career for meritorious service.  Commissioner Cassano is upgrading the role of Chief of EMS from a three to a four-star position, in recognition of the growing stature and importance of EMS, which responded to a record 1.26 million calls last year.

Other promotions include Jerry Gombo from Deputy Assistant Chief to Assistant Chief of Operations, Michael Fitton from Division Chief to Deputy Assistant Chief, Rosario Terranova and Janice Olszewski from Deputy Chiefs to Division Chiefs and Captains John Sullivan, Phillip Chindelas and Nancy Gilligan from Captains to Deputy Chiefs.

In addition, 21 Paramedics are being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and five EMTs are being promoted to the rank of Paramedic. All of the newly promoted members will be assigned to various units throughout the city.
