Press Releases / 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 4, 2010

The New York City Fire Department and Tishman Speyer will celebrate Fire Prevention Week 2010 with the swearing in of 300 junior firefighters at Rockefeller Center on Tuesday October 5, 2010 at 11 a.m.

Children from schools in all five boroughs will be on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center wearing red fire helmets and learning valuable lessons in fire safety from members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit.  All children will have the opportunity to interact with firefighters, fire engines, and fire trucks and will watch demonstrations by FDNY members.  Every child will take the Junior Firefighter’s Pledge, an oath designed to remind children to practice fire safety and share it with their family and friends.  The oath will be administered by Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano.

“Fire safety is important for people of all ages, but especially for children,” said Commissioner Cassano.  “Every year during National Fire Prevention Week, the department comes to Rockefeller Center and shows children the importance of fire safety to their homes and family.  These are extremely valuable lessons that can truly save lives.”
