Press Releases / 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: OCTOBER 1, 2010

The New York City Fire Department will be holding events from Sunday, October 3 to Saturday, October 9 in all five boroughs to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week 2010.  At every event during this important week, New Yorkers of all ages will have the chance to interact with members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and learn valuable, life-saving lessons in fire safety.

“National Fire Prevention Week is a very important week for the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and the FDNY Foundation,” said Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano.  “Their efforts to spread the message of fire safety, not just this week, but year round, are clearly working.  Fire-related deaths are at historic lows over the past eight years, due in large part to the tremendous work they do informing New Yorkers that taking a few steps to make yourself and your home fire safe can save your life.”

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the country have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
