Press Releases / 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NOVEMBER 22, 2009

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta will join family members, colleagues and friends of Lieutenant Robert J. Ryan Jr. to honor his memory at a plaque dedication ceremony on Monday, November 23, 10 a.m. at the quarters of Engine 155/Ladder 78 at 14 Brighton Avenue on Staten Island.

"With Thanksgiving coming in the shadow of that awful day which claimed Bobby's life, this is always going to be a difficult time of the year for his family and friends and neighbors," said Mayor Bloomberg. "This Thanksgiving, I'm going to feel thankful we were lucky enough to have Bobby Ryan on this Earth protecting our city - even if his time with us was far too short."

“The strongest and most important part of this department are the members that work in this city each and every day to selflessly help others and perform their duty to the best of their ability,” said Commissioner Scoppetta.  “Lieutenant Ryan was among the strongest and most important of those members. His experience, dedication and leadership are sorely missed and will never be forgotten.”

On Sunday, November 23, 2008, at 12:28 a.m., Lieutenant Ryan was on duty at Engine 155 when his company responded to a fire at a two-story private residence at 39 Van Buren St. in Staten Island.  Engine 155 was the first company to arrive on scene.  Lieutenant Ryan sustained critical injuries at the 2 alarm fire and was transported to Richmond University Medical Center where he died later that day.

Lieutenant Ryan, 46, was assigned to Engine 155 for over two years.  He was a veteran of the department for more than 17 years, appointed to the FDNY on April 14, 1991.  He was previously assigned to Engines 228, 280 and 282 in Brooklyn, Engine 6 in Manhattan, the 4th Battalion in Manhattan and the 22nd Battalion in Staten Island.  He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in March 2001.  Lieutenant Ryan was a lifelong Staten Island resident and is survived by his wife, Kathleen; a son, Chris; a daughter, Kayla; a stepson, Alex; and a stepdaughter, Emma.
