FDNY HOSTS FIRE SAFETY DAY AT METROTECH COMMONS AS PART OF NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2009

The FDNY continues observance of National Fire Prevention Week 2009 with Fire Safety Day at Metrotech Commons at 11 a.m. on Thursday October 8.

Over 40 first graders from the Brooklyn Friends School will be on hand learning valuable lessons in fire safety and prevention from members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit. The children will take the junior firefighters oath and will have the chance to interact with firefighters, a fire truck, an ambulance and Hot Dog, the FDNY Fire Safety mascot. Free CPR training will also be offered in two sessions to all who attend Fire Safety Day. In addition, Dominos Pizza will be throwing a free pizza party in Metrotech Commons as part of the day’s festivities.

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the country have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention.
