Press Releases / 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 3, 2009

The New York City Fire Department and Tishman Speyer will kick off Fire Prevention Week 2009 with the swearing in of over 2,000 junior firefighters at Rockefeller Center on Monday October 5, 2009 at 11 a.m.

Children from more than 30 grade schools in all 5 boroughs will be on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center wearing red fire helmets and learning valuable lessons in fire safety from members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit. All children will have the opportunity to interact with firefighters, fire engines, and fire trucks. Firefighters will be performing demonstrations as well, including a rope rescue and a hazmat demonstration. Every child will take the Junior Firefighter’s Pledge, an oath designed to remind children to practice fire safety and share it with their family and friends. The oath will be administered by Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano.

“Fire-related deaths are at historic lows over the past 7 years due in large part to the tremendous work done by the Fire Safety Education Unit and FDNY Foundation. At thousands of events like this each year, we are distributing batteries and smoke alarms and teaching New Yorkers the critical importance of fire safety,” Commissioner Scoppetta said. “National Fire Prevention Week serves as a great chance to remind all of us, especially children, about the importance of fire safety education.”

National Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire on October 8, 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures. Fire departments throughout the country have since commemorated the anniversary every year, in the second week of October, by informing the public about the importance of fire safety and fire prevention. Several additional fire safety events will take place around the city during National Fire Prevention Week giving every New Yorker a chance to learn about fire prevention.
