COMMISSIONER SCOPPETTA OVERSEES PROMOTION OF FDNY STAFF CHIEFS, INCLUDING NEW CHIEF OF OPERATIONS

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta will preside over a promotions ceremony at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn for five staff chiefs, including Robert Sweeney, who will become Chief of Operations, the department’s second-highest ranking uniformed member.  He replaces Chief Patrick McNally, who retired last month.

Other promotions include Chief James Manahan, from Deputy Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Operations to Assistant Chief of Operations; Chief William Seelig, from Deputy Chief of Division 6 to Deputy Assistant Chief of Special Operations Command (SOC); Chief Joseph Woznica, from a Deputy Chief of Division 11 to Deputy Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention; and Chief Robert Boyce, from Deputy Chief of Division 11 to Deputy Assistant Chief of Personnel.

“With over 142 years of combined experience, these newly promoted chiefs have shown their dedication to the department and New York City,” Commissioner Scoppetta said. “I am confident that they have the knowledge and experience necessary to lead and strengthen the FDNY.”

Chief Sweeney began his career with the Department at Engine 69 in Harlem on November 24, 1979.  During his career at FDNY, he has served as Queens Borough Commander and for the past three years he has been Assistant Chief of Operations.  Chief Sweeney has received various unit citations for his service at the Department.  He is joined in the FDNY by his two brothers, Lieutenant William Sweeney of Engine 313 and Firefighter Frank Sweeney of Engine 306, along with two cousins.
