FDNY HOLDS 8TH ANNUAL BLESSING OF THE FDNY MARINE FLEET
AT INTREPID SEA, AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM

The New York City Fire Department will host the 8th Annual Blessing of the FDNY Marine Fleet at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Saturday, July 18 at 11 a.m.  The FDNY Marine Fleet consists of more than 30 vessels responsible for over 450 miles of coastline and harbors.  Over the past 134 years, the fleet has played a critical role in responding to emergencies in New York City.

“For more than a century, the Marine Division has been a vital part of FDNY operations. While engines and ladders cover the land, the Marine Division takes over at the shoreline,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.  “Every time someone is in trouble on our waterways – as we saw recently at Flight 1549’s landing on the Hudson River and just last week at the Throgs Neck Bridge fire – the Marine Division is there.”

Saturday will feature many activities for the public.  FDNY members will be performing rescue demonstrations and will have current and antique apparatus on display.  EMS members will be offering free CPR training and the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will be conducting fire safety demonstrations. In addition, the FDNY Fire Zone will be selling clothing to raise money for the FDNY Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports FDNY initiatives including training, education and equipment.
