Press Releases / 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 17, 2009

Kornreich-NIA and the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company have partnered to award an $8,600 grant to the FDNY tomorrow at 11am at Engine Company 155/Ladder 78 on Staten Island to purchase equipment to enhance the physical fitness and training of its members.

Grant funds will be used to purchase a rowing machine, versaclimber, heavy bag, weights and other exercise equipment. This generous grant will also be used to purchase equipment for training purchases, including a fog machine meant to simulate smoke conditions in a fire.

“The FDNY is committed to supporting the health and fitness of its members because conditioning and physical fitness is such a large part of every firefighter’s job,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.  “This grant helps support that commitment by making the exercise and training available on a daily basis in the firehouse.”

This is the second grant by Kornreich-NIA to the FDNY.  This grant was inspired by the death of one of Engine 155’s members, Lieutenant Robert J. Ryan Jr.  On November 23, 2008, Lieutenant Ryan sustained critical injuries while operating at a 2nd Alarm fire at 39 Van Buren St., in the New Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island.  Lieutenant Ryan was a 17 year veteran of the department and a lifelong Staten Island resident.

Since December 2006, Fireman’s Fund has awarded the FDNY over $400,000.
