Press Releases / 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 22, 2009

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta will join the FDNY Foundation on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the New York Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, for their annual Humanitarian Awards dinner to honor three individuals who have provided overwhelming support to the New York City Fire Department over the course of their distinguished careers.

Established in 1981, the FDNY Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps bring the vital message of fire safety and prevention to all New Yorkers. It also supports the life-saving work of the FDNY through various programs that provide new equipment, training and support for thousands of firefighters and members of the department’s Emergency Medical Service.

This year’s honorees are Brian Williams, Anchor and Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News; Kevin Burke, Chairman and CEO of Con Edison; and Arthur E. Imperatore Sr., Founder and CEO of New York Waterway.

In the past year, the FDNY Foundation has:

  • Helped fund the nation’s first high-rise firefighter training simulator at the FDNY Academy.
  • Distributed more than 30,000 smoke detectors and 250,000 batteries.
  • Provided resources and materials for 9,300 fire safety presentations to 660,000 New Yorkers.
  • Helped the department obtain approximately 4,000 CPR kits that help ordinary citizens learn the lifesaving skill.
