FDNY RECEIVES $50,000 GRANT FOR FIRE SAFETY EDUCATION, TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING

The New York City Fire Department and the FDNY Foundation will host a fire safety presentation for elementary school students at Ladder 7/Engine 16 at 11am on March 13, 2009 in conjunction with the donation of a $50,000 grant by the New York Branch of CRC Insurance Services and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.

The FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will use grant funds to purchase flashlights, rulers, magnets and other fire safety promotional items to be given out at presentations around the city. These presentations take place at schools, community centers, street fairs, senior centers, and religious institutions and teach critical lessons about fire safety, often in the native language of residents.

“This very generous grant benefits the firefighters of this house and all New Yorkers by increasing funding for fire safety education,” said Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.  “We know that fire safety education helps save lives.”

The funds from this grant will also be used to purchase a digital camera, laptop computer, projector and other technology for Ladder 7/Engine 16 in Gramercy Park, allowing firefighters to make customized presentations for other members that deal specifically with the buildings, hazards and environments in their response areas.

In addition, firefighters will be able to train on a forcible entry simulator purchased through this grant. This important tool helps train firefighters on how to gain forcible entry though all types of doors during emergencies.  Finally, grant funds will be used to purchase new exercise equipment for the firehouse, including an elliptical machine and treadmill.

Since December 2006, Fireman’s Fund has awarded the FDNY over $400,000.
