ON 2nd ANNIVERSARY OF TRAGIC HIGHBRIDGE FIRE FDNY PARTICIPATES IN COMMUNITY SERVICE COORDINATION DAY

FDNY reminds New Yorkers to change your batteries when you change your clocks

The New York City Fire Department will join Community Board 4 in the Bronx at an Information Fair as part of Community Service Coordination Day on March 7th. On that date in 2007, a 3 alarm fire at 1022 Woodycrest Avenue killed 10 members of the Magassa and Soumare families. A memorial for the victims will take place following the information fair.

The FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit will have representatives on hand to distribute batteries, donated by a new partnership between Duracell and the FDNY Foundation, for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. The FDNY Hazard House, an interactive house similar to a real New York City apartment that allows children to identify hazards, will be on location, along with the FDNY mascot “Hot Dog the Fire Safety Dog.” In addition, literature, fliers and door hangers will be handed out to help teach residents what they can do in their home to prevent a fire.

“Our hope is that the memory of this tragic incident can be used to save lives,” said Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. “It serves as a reminder to residents of this neighborhood and all New Yorkers of the importance of fire prevention and preparedness in the home.”
