FDNY OFFICIALS TESTIFY ON FIRE SAFETY ISSUES TO CITY COUNCIL; LOCAL STUDENTS TOUR FDNYS MOBILE FIRE SAFETY EXPERIENCE

With winter officially beginning Sunday, accompanied by increased fire safety risks, the FDNY is taking important home safety tips to City Hall tomorrow during a 2 p.m. hearing of the City Council Fire and Criminal Justice Services Committee. FDNY Assistant Chief of Operations Robert Sweeney and FDNY Foundation Executive Director Jean O’Shea will testify about the importance of home fire safety. Chief Fire Marshal Robert Byrnes will also testify in favor of legislation sponsored by Councilman Miguel Martinez, the committee chairman, to ban the sale and distribution of novelty lighters in New York City.

Just prior to the hearing, Councilman Martinez will join a class of fourth-grade students from Public School 33 in Chelsea and FDNY mascot “Hot Dog the Fire Safety Dog” to tour the department’s Mobile Fire Safety Experience outside City Hall. The mobile unit includes replicas of a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen where students can help identify fire safety hazards. It also includes a darkened corridor that simulates conditions inside a burning home and instructs visitors on how to safely escape.
