FDNY TO CELEBRATE THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF BATTALION 52 AND ENGINE COMPANY 274
Officers, firefighters and former members of Battalion 52 and Engine Company 274 in Flushing, Queens, tomorrow will celebrate 100 years of dedicated service to the community and the City.
During the ceremony, a plaque will be dedicated to honor two members who died in the line of duty, Firefighter Bernard Reilly of Engine 274, who died in 1928, and Firefighter Thomas Maher of Battalion 52, who died in 1956.
In the past 100 years, the members of Engine 274 responded to many notable fires, including two large gas explosions – one at the Hyo Shin Bible Presbyterian Church in Sept. 1996, which injured 10 people; and another on Sandford Ave. in July 2008, which injured 17.
Among the honored guests at the centennial will be the great-grandson of a firefighter who worked at the company in 1913.
