FORMER NY GIANTS QUARTERBACK AND HALL OF FAMER Y.A. TITTLE JOINS COMMISSIONER SCOPPETTA MONDAY AT FDNY FIRE ZONE TO SUPPORT THE CHIEFS’ SMOKE ALARM INITIATIVE

Legendary Hall of Famer and former New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle will pass a $27,500 check to the FDNY at 2 p.m. Monday Nov 17 at the FDNY Fire Zone, 34 West 51st St., allowing the Department to purchase and distribute 1,500 smoke alarms to residents citywide as winter begins. His agency, Y.A. Tittle & Associates Insurance Services, is partnering with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company to award the grant. Since December 2006, Fireman’s Fund has donated over $300,000 to the FDNY.

“Last month’s tragedy in Chelsea, which claimed the lives of six family members, could likely have been avoided with a working smoke alarm,” Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said. “This generous gift from Mr. Tittle and the Fireman’s Fund will help us get working smoke alarms out to more families and keep them safe. The Fireman’s Fund has provided great support to this department’s efforts and we’re grateful to be with them again here today.”

More than two-thirds of all fire deaths in New York City last year occurred in homes without working smoke alarms. The FDNY Chiefs’ Smoke Alarm Initiative will equip Battalion vehicles with a supply of alarms and batteries to distribute when they observe a non-working alarm or when they enter a home where none is present.

“New York has given me so much,” Tittle said. “I feel compelled to give back to the city in a tangible way.” Tittle, who played with the Giants from 1961-64, is expanding his agency’s business operations from California to New York.
