FIRE COMMISSIONER SCOPPETTA REMINDS NEW YORKERS
AND STUDENTS FROM THE HOLY CROSS SCHOOL TO CHANGE
THEIR SMOKE ALARM BATTERIES WHEN THEY CHANGE
THEIR CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND

Thirty Seconds and Nine Volts Can Save Your Life

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, the Fire Safety Education Unit and the FDNY Foundation will be on hand at the Hilton in Times Square tomorrow to remind New Yorkers and fifth graders from Holy Cross School to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks back to Eastern Standard Time before bed Saturday.

The FDNY and the FDNY Foundation, in partnership with the Hilton in Times Square, organized the event as part of the Fire Department’s “Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries” campaign. The FDNY Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports major FDNY initiatives including training, equipment and education.

FDNY personnel will be distributing batteries for smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as some helpful hints on how to stay safe. “Hot Dog the Fire Safety Dog” will also be elevated in a tower ladder to change the clock above the Hilton entrance.  Fire prevention experts all agree that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors save lives. However, they must be working properly and inspected regularly. It is one of the simplest ways to protect you and your family from the potential dangers of fire.

Fire Commissioner Scoppetta, Chief of Department Salvatore Cassano, Chief of Operations Patrick McNally, members of the FDNY’s Fire Safety Education Unit, representatives from the FDNY Foundation and the fifth grade class from Holy Cross School.
